How AI Agent Pay works Shinhan Card Co., Ltd. announced that it has conducted the first proof of concept in Korea's card industry for 'AI Agent Pay' in partnership with Mastercard. AI Agent Pay is a technology that allows artificial intelligence to complete the entire process, from search to payment, on behalf of a person. With just one approval, users can complete a transaction.
How the live transaction test was carried out The live test was conducted in connection with a Global Mobility Services platform. When the AI agent finds the best transportation option to a destination and makes a reservation, Agent Pay automatically processes the payment. Shinhan Card Co., Ltd. and Mastercard jointly designed the systems essential to implementing AI Agent Pay, including authentication and authorization management, payment process design, AI capability enhancement, and merchant integration.
What the real-world implementation of Agentic Commerce means This achievement marks the first case among domestic card issuers of implementing 'Agentic Commerce,' in which AI handles everything from search to payment according to the user's purpose, through an actual merchant transaction rather than a virtual environment. AI takes over the cumbersome steps of product search, booking, and other parts of the purchase process.
Shinhan Card Co., Ltd.'s expansion plans Starting with this test, Shinhan Card Co., Ltd. plans to introduce AI Agent Pay first in areas customers use frequently, such as travel and shopping. The company also plans to gradually expand the scope of application. Shinhan Card Co., Ltd.'s role will also grow beyond a simple payment method to become a partner that supports the customer's entire spending journey.
Industry and company reactions A Mastercard official said, "This is a case that shows AI can safely make payments in real-world environments," adding, "We will accelerate efforts to expand the Agentic Commerce ecosystem in the Asia-Pacific region and establish trusted AI payment standards." A Shinhan Card Co., Ltd. official said, "Through this live transaction, we proved that even in an AI-driven payment environment, we can maintain the core values of card payments — security and control — while securing customer trust."
