Skin safety and ingredient checks are key when choosing fabric softeners

Unilever

Snuggle, Unilever Korea's fabric care brand, has launched two Snuggle Indoor-Drying Sunshine Fabric Softeners. "Huggable Sunshine" and "Mellow Sunshine" double the deodorizing ingredients to control everyday odors while providing a soft fragrance. The products received Dermatest's top Excellent grade in Germany and exclude six types of parabens, making them suitable for sensitive skin.

A Snuggle official said, "There is a clear trend toward considering not only fragrance but also safety when choosing a fabric softener," adding, "Because this is a product that comes into direct contact with the skin, we will continue to focus on developing products that take consumers' health into account."

How fabric softeners affect the skin

Fabric softeners leave ingredients on clothing even after washing, so they come into direct contact with the skin. As everyday products, it is important to check not only the fragrance but also the ingredients and whether they have been tested.

How to choose fragrance strength

A stronger fragrance can improve user satisfaction, but it may cause headaches or discomfort for some consumers. Rather than choosing an overly irritating scent, it is better to select a product that takes the usage environment and skin irritation into account.

What Dermatest certification means

Dermatest is a test conducted by a dermatology research institute in Germany to evaluate product safety. Dermatologists, allergy specialists, biologists, and food chemists participate to verify whether skin-contact products cause irritation and whether they are safe.

Why it is necessary to check for parabens

Parabens are ingredients used to prevent products from spoiling, but concerns have been raised that they may cause skin irritation in some consumers. For people with sensitive skin, products labeled as paraben-free are recommended.

Glossary box * Dermatest: An international certification system that evaluates the safety of skin-contact products through tests conducted by a German dermatology research institute. Dermatologists, allergy specialists, biologists, and food chemists participate to verify product irritation and safety. * Paraben: A preservative used to prevent product spoilage. Because it may cause skin irritation in some consumers, paraben-free products are recommended for people with sensitive skin. * Fabric softener: A laundry additive that softens clothing fibers and adds fragrance during washing. Ingredients remain on the fabric even after washing, so the product can come into direct contact with the skin.

Q. How should fabric softeners be chosen?

Choose a fabric softener by checking the fragrance strength, whether it has Dermatest certification, and whether it contains parabens. Because it is a product that comes into direct contact with the skin, it is important to choose one with safety in mind.
