On the 16th, Dongsung Huayintec announced that it has developed low-carbon and high-efficiency LNG (liquefied natural gas) carrier insulation and completed carbon footprint verification by the Norwegian Shipment Association (DNV). DNV is the world's largest shipping agency, with 18% of ships operating worldwide and 25% of ships built annually in Korea obtaining DNV certification.
According to Dongsung Huintech, the DNV verification results show that greenhouse gas emissions generated in the entire process of collecting, transporting, producing, and disposing of raw materials are 33% lower than those of existing products. If the insulation is applied to 174K LNG carriers, which are large ships, carbon emissions can be reduced by about 54,500 tons compared to the previous one. It is equivalent to the carbon emissions emitted by 25,000 cars in a year.
Insulation performance has also been enhanced. Dongsung Industrial Technology has improved its thermal conductivity by up to 6% in cryogenic operation sections by upgrading existing technology that dramatically blocks external heat penetration so that LNG remains liquid. "If external heat is introduced, natural evaporation gas can be generated, leading to cargo loss," an official at Dongsung Synthetic Tech said, adding, "As LNG is transported at ultra-low temperatures below minus 160 degrees Celsius, it is important to minimize external heat inflow." Dongsung Hwa Intec plans to actively expand global orders by using low-carbon and high-efficiency insulation materials.
We have focused on developing technologies to respond to climate change under our brand philosophy of 'EcoTeco', which means eco-friendly technologies for a better global environment, said Lee Ju-ho, head of Dongsung Syntech Research Institute, who led the technology development. "We will expand our product portfolio and lead a new 'green standard' in the global maritime insulation market."
