Chungcheongnam-do announced on the 22nd that it will conduct a "special monitoring and crackdown on environmental pollution activities in the summer season" to prevent environmental pollution accidents caused by torrential rains in the summer until August.
The special inspection team organized by province, city and county will check the prevention of illegal activities and prevention of environmental pollution accidents, focusing on areas with high water pollution effects such as rivers and valleys.
Specifically, the province will crack down on 25 workplaces, including the first and second types of wastewater discharge facilities and wastewater consignment treatment companies, which have a large impact on water pollution. The city and county will inspect facilities concerned about water pollution, including malicious wastewater discharge companies, large wastewater discharge sites, non-point pollutant installations, sewage treatment facilities, and food service businesses around rivers and valleys.
Provincial governments and cities will guide businesses this month on their own inspections and facility management tips in preparation for torrential rains. It will then strengthen monitoring and crackdown by intensively checking wastewater discharge and pollutant leaks until August, and conducting wastewater pollution tests if necessary.
After the torrential rain period, the government plans to provide technical support in connection with specialized organizations such as the Korea Environmental Conservation Agency to quickly restore the damaged prevention facilities.
Kim Young-myung, director of the Environmental Forest Bureau in Chungcheongnam-do, said, "Even a small negligence of management can lead to water pollution in public waters during torrential rains," adding, "We will thoroughly prevent and manage environmental pollution activities with the city and county."
