1일 현대차가 미국 상무부에 제출한 '무역확장법 232조 수입차 안보영향 조사에 대한 의견서'에 따르면, "미국에서 팔리는 현대차 차량의 절반 가까이가 현지에서 만들어지는데, 생산비용이 늘면 차량 가격이 인상되고 결국 판매 감소와 수익성 악화로 이어져 고용을 줄일 수밖에 없다"고 밝혔다.

The nation’s auto giant sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Commerce on Sunday, arguing against the sweeping tariff measure that would “not only harm Hyundai Motor’s U.S. business operations and the American workers and communities, but also jeopardize Hyundai Motor’s plans for additional U.S. investments.”

현대차는 지금까지 미국에 83억달러를 투자했으며, 지난 5월에는 앨라배마 공장의 엔진헤드 제조설비 증설 등을 위해 3억8천800만달러를 투자한다고 발표한 바 있다.

The company has been investing $8.3 billion in the U.S. so far, and in May pledged another $380 million to add an engine head manufacturing facility at its Alabama factory.

Hyundai Motor joined other global automakers such as BMW and Toyota Motor in urging the U.S. not to impose the heavy duties on imported cars. U.S. President Donald Trump is seeking to slap a maximum 25 percent tariff on auto imports after ordering the commerce department to launch an investigation in May under the Trade Expansion Act to judge whether imported vehicles have damaged the American auto industry and national security. The hardly-used Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act aimed to protect national security was revived earlier this year to curb steel imports and has become the most feared weaponry in the trade war Trump administration has set off.

특히 공장 생산직뿐 아니라 미국 전역에 있는 835개 대리점(dealerships)에서 고용 축소가 불가피하다고 설명했다. 현재 미국에서 현대차가 협력사와 함께 직접 고용한 인력은 2만5천명이며, 대리점을 통해 간접 고용한 인력은 4만7천명이다.

Hyundai said in the comments that the trade restrictions would threaten 25,000 workers directly hired by the carmaker in the U.S. and additional 47,000 people it has indirectly employed through its 835 dealerships across the nation, as it locally produces almost half of its vehicles sold in the U.S.

현대차는 이런 이유를 들어 자사의 수입 자동차 및 자동차부품이 미국 안보에 위협이 되지 않는다고 강조했다.

“Given these outcomes, which are unique among major automotive exporting nations, Korean automobile and auto part imports cannot be a threat to the U.S. economy or national security,” Hyundai said in the comments.
