4일 카카오 자회사 카카오 모빌리티에 따르면 6일부터 인천시 연수구와 성남시 일대에서 카카오T 바이크 시범 서비스가 시작된다.
Kakao Mobility, the transportation service unit of Kakao, said the new electric bike-sharing scheme dubbed Kakao T Bike would start Wednesday in the Yeonsu District of Incheon city and various parts of Seongnam city.
택시업계의 반발로 카풀 서비스가 가로막힌 가운데 ‘마이크로 모빌리티(단거리 이동수단)’ 분야로 진출하는 것이다. 카카오 카풀 서비스 도입에 반대하는 수만 명의 택시기사들이 광화문 광장에 모여 집회를 벌였고, 이 가운데 두 명은 분신을 시도한 끝에 목숨을 잃기도 했다.
The e-bike campaign arrives after Kakao’s latest attempts to venture into the carpooling service were thwarted due to fierce backlash from the taxi community. Tens of thousands of taxi drivers held mass rallies in Seoul late last year to protest against the new service, with two drivers taking their own lives after setting themselves on fire. Kakao postponed the official launch following the suicide.
카카오T 바이크는 카카오T 애플리케이션으로 근처 전기 자전거를 찾아 빌려 탈 수 있는 서비스다. 이용자는 전기 자전거를 타고 이동한 뒤 도착 장소 주변에 자유롭게 세워두면 된다. 서울시에서 운영하는 '따릉이' 등과는 달리 별도 주차 공간이나 거치대를 찾을 필요가 없다. 카카오T 앱에 카드를 등록하면 자동 결제된다. 15분에 1000원이 기본요금이며, 5분마다 500원씩 추가된다. 첫 사용 시 보증금 1만원을 예치해야 한다.
Through the Kakao T app, users can rent a bike nearby and simply leave the bike when they’re done as there are no fixed docking stations. The fees are automatically charged to the credit card registered on the app. The fee for the first 15 minutes is 1,000 ($0.89) and 500 won for each additional five minutes. First-time users would need to pay a refundable security deposit of 10,000 won.
카카오 모빌리티는 인천 연수구에 우선적으로 400여대를 도입하며, 연내 1000대까지 확대할 계획이다. 성남시에서도 이와 유사한 규모로 운영한다. 지난해 12월 국내 자전거 제조기업 삼천리자전거, 알톤스포츠와 업무협약(MOU)을 맺고, 자전거 도로 운행법 요건에 맞게 만든 전기 자전거를 제공 받는다.
Kakao Mobility plans to start with a fleet of 400 bikes in each city and gradually expand them to 1,000 by the year end. In December, it struck a deal with local bike makers Samchuly Bicycle and Alton Sports to receive a fleet of electric bikes specifically tailored to meet domestic bike road laws.
카카오는 지역별로 운영팀을 꾸려 전기 자전거를 관리한다. 별도 주차 장소가 지정되지 않아 실시간 전기 자전거 위치를 찾아다니며 충전, 배터리 교체 등 관리를 해야 하기 때문이다. 운영팀은 주차 실수로 전기 자전거가 보행을 방해할 경우 이를 적절한 장소로 옮긴다는 방침이다.
To manage the dockless bike system, the company would run a maintenance team by region that would go around recharging the electric bikes and replacing old batteries, as well as moving indiscriminately parked bikes.
카카오측은 대중교통 노선이 닿지 않거나 거리가 가까워 택시가 잡히지 않는 경우에 전기 자전거가 대안이 될 것이라고 설명한다. 이미 미국, 중국 등 세계 각지에서 자전거, 전기 자전거, 전동 킥보드, 전동 스쿠터 등 다양한 단거리 이동 수단 연계 서비스가 우후죽순 생겨나고 있다.
The bike-share scheme would serve areas not covered by public transportation or where there aren’t available taxis, Kakao said, citing the wide array of different mobility services such as bikes, kickboards and scooters offered in countries like China and the U.S.
국내에서도 전기 자전거 공유 스타트업 '일레클'이 서울시 일부 지역 대상으로 시범 서비스를 실시하고 있다.
Currently Elecle, a local bike-share operator, is pilot testing a similar electric bike-share service in Seoul.
